Here is our Space Settlement Video!
Reflection
How did you grow as a Digital Artist during this project? (Think in terms of Lighting, Framing, Editing, etc…)
As a Digital Artist, I think I grew in some ways, but could have made more of an effort to grow even more. During the editing and storyboarding of the film, I feel that I learned a lot and grew as an editor because I was working with a program that I had worked with before, but was not super familiar with. Through the editing process I learned more about the iMovie software and about how to make beautiful movies on it. However, I feel that I could have done more with Lighting, Framing, and other photography techniques that I didn’t put into the video. I am a little disappointed that I didn’t get a chance to experiment with these more during the project because I really enjoy photography. I think I could have done more with these things if I did more outside of school and had more time.
How can at least four of the following Physics concepts be applied to a space settlement: circular motion, center of gravity, torque, and Newton’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd laws of motion?
Newton’s First Law:
Newton’s First Law States that an object in a state of rest or uniform motion will persist in that state unless acted upon by an outside force. This acts upon a space settlement because without an outside force such as gravity from another object (in this case a planet) the space settlement would simply continue moving at a constant speed through space. Another force that could act upon it are things that are in place for the sole purpose of keeping the settlement in one place or moving in whatever direction such as thrusters.
Newton’s Third Law:
Newton’s Second Law States that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. If a space settlement was on the surface of a planet, the gravity from the planet would be pulling the settlement down, keeping it on the ground, and normal force would be pushing back, keeping it above the ground.
Torque and Centripetal Force:
Torque is a twisting force that acts upon an object and causes it to rotate and centripetal force is the force acting upon an object to make it move in a circle. These forces acts upon a space settlement in space because in order to have gravity, the settlement must spin. Torque and centripetal force cause this spinning and circular motion and create artificial gravity within the settlement.
Using evidence, please describe which of the following 21st Century Skills was your greatest strength during this project: collaboration, flexibility, communication, adaptation, critical thinking, refinement, creativity, and problem solving.
My greatest strength during this project was probably collaboration. I feel that my group and I all worked really well together on this project. In the past I have found that I either take over projects or my groups members don’t want to contribute; in both situations I end up doing most of the project. However, throughout this project we were almost always in agreement about things. Especially when we were editing and refining I feel that the work was very evenly distributed between us without just one of us doing all of the work. This was probably because we were a small, very compatible group.
Using evidence, please describe which of the following 21st Century Skills was your greatest area for growth during this project: collaboration, flexibility, communication, adaptation, critical thinking, refinement, creativity, and problem solving.
My greatest area for growth for this project is creativity. I definitely could have put more of my artistic ability into this project, but I think since I felt crunched for time I thought that I wouldn’t be able to do it. I really enjoy photography and I think that I could have made more of an effort to insert some of that into the project, which also would have made it more enjoyable and given me more motivation for the project. I still got some of it into the film, but I am disappointed that I didn’t do more.
Another area of growth for me is refinement. When we were watching our films on the big screen, I caught a lot of the mistakes and things that I didn’t catch before. They were just little things like I was talking to fast in the voiceover, where were weird pauses in some places and not enough pause in others, B-roll that didn’t match the voiceover, etc. They were not super noticeable, but there were just enough of them that it wasn’t as professional as I would have hoped. I am very proud of our final product, but I think we could have made it seem even more professional and made it more interesting to watch.
